Residence, Den Haag [NL]

This staircase, in a home in The Hague, Holland, is a highly sensual counterpoint to the interior design of the rest of the room. The interior is essentially monochrome, in black and shades of grey. The steel staircase has a silky matt black finish, and the helical balustrades produce beautifully subtle variations of reflected light which visually softens the geometric precision of the ‘twist’.

The other notable aspect of the staircase is the tightness of the ascending turns. These radiuses ensured that the stairs would block a minimal amount of external light from the rest of the main living room. The compressed symmetry recalls the form of Alexander Archipenko’s Cubist sculpture of a female figure, giving the stairs the aura of a large-scale artwork.

The smooth perfection of the balustrades and soffit, and the way the black stain of the treads and risers match their colour, demonstrates the skills of the EeStairs fabricators. Our own team of installers was also on point: the staircase was transported on a low-loader through the narrow, historic streets of The Hague, and then craned into position in the home.
